June 2024: Interns

If you pay utility bills at city hall you’ve probably encountered one or more of the city’s three student interns.

All have done outstanding work and are off to university in the fall.

The city’s co-op students work primarily in customer service, waiting on the counter, posting payments, issuing receipts, answering phones, sorting mail, processing utility bills and more. During the school year they average 10-16 hours/week each. But they take on other projects, too.

Ava Frost “has done a great job with auditing and updating cemetery records and producing some PSA and promotional videos,” said Finance Director Bobbie Marr, and is headed to Davenport University to study business management and accounting.

Curtis Brashaw, the SLHS valedictorian this year, also worked on cemetery records and video production. He’s off to Notre Dame University this fall.

Payton Kuhn, a 2023 SLHS grad, is in her second year of working for the city. “She is a detail-oriented and organized individual and has what I would call uncommon common sense that makes it easy for us to assign her a variety of things,” Marr said.

Kuhn begins her sophomore year at CMU this fall (studying physical education) but will be the city pool director this summer in addition to working in the finance office.

The school district usually has 15-20 students in the work-based learning program each year, said business education teacher Andrea Biehl, who runs the program.

This year they have students working at daycares, Schnepps Senior Care and Rehab Center, Weidman Appraisal, Walmart, McDonalds’,  Avalon Tahoe, Lossio Pediatrics, ADW Industries, and the intermediate school district in addition to the city.

Former interns make good

The city has had a number of notable student interns, including Stephanie (Cross) Binder, who interned circa 2005 and went on to be principal of Carrie Knause Elementary.

Rachel (Howd) Piner has been clerk, treasurer, interim city manager in Webberville and Williamston and currently is deputy treasurer for Ingham County.

“She is frequently a speaker at the treasurers’ conference and often attributes her passion for serving and being involved at the local level to her time at St. Louis,” Marr said.

Janelle Dickman interned for St. Louis in 2013-15 and is now is in human resources for a loan company in Southeast Michigan.

Katie (Aikens) Hernandez started as a high school co-op in 2015 and continued to work part-time after she graduated. She lives here locally with her husband and two daughters.

Brittney Roberson interned for the city in 2017-2018 and stayed on through January 2021 while attending Mid-Michigan Community College. She still lives in the area and works remotely in accounting and data processing for Streamlined Business Solutions.

Drew Sherwood interned for the city in 2017-2018 and is working on a master’s degree in speech-language pathology at CMU.

Lexi Beeson interned in 2018-2019 and went on to work in human resources for the auto industry.

Alyssa Roberson interned in 2018-2019, graduated from Ferris State and now works as a dental hygienist in the Grand Rapids area.

Allyse March interned in 2019-2020 and graduated from CMU in May with a bachelor’s degree in integrative public relations and communications.

Beth Vanderhart interned in 2019-2020, just graduated from Delta College and is working towards being a physical therapist assistant.

Leah Chivojka interned in 2021-2022 and currently studies elementary education at Alma College.

Gracie Shattuck interned in 2021-2022, attends CMU and is in the National Guard.

Colton Markwell interned in 2022-2023 and studies accounting and business administration at CMU.
